ADELAIDE THREE DAY EVENT
On the 19th through to the 22nd of November 2015 Adelaide hummed with the best riders and horses in Australia competing at the only 4**** Three Day Event in the Southern Hemisphere. This mighty annual event is called the Australian International 3DE CCI****. The director of this performance of excellence is no other than Australian Olympic Gold medallist Gillian Rolton. For those of you who are unaware an international event with a four**** ranking means it is of an equivalent standard to the Olympic games...
The Journey to the 2016 Rio Olympics Continues - The 73% Strategy
13th August, 2015
So far we have been dealing with the riders and horses starting to make an impression on the top level competitions which will interest the Australian selectors when it comes to selecting an Australian Dressage team and an Australian Eventing team. At first glance an outside observer would be excused for thinking that this is a simple process and you simply select the first four place getters in the final selection trial just before the Olympic Games. Well for those of you who have been following the articles for the last few months in the Equestrian Life magazine you would be starting to get an insight into the complexities of getting accurate competition results...
The Rio De Janeiro Olympic Story continued
2nd June 2015
In the last column we discussed the beginnings of the Australian campaign towards the Rio Olympics. We discussed the characters as in the riders and of course the horses who are shaping up to be contenders for the Australian Dressage team and the Australian Eventing team. We discussed some of the tactics and pitfalls that these athletes will encounter and how unfair some of this will be. Heartbreaking actually and yet not really anyone’s fault...
AOS Horses Going Gang Busters
Welcome to our Auction of the Stars (AOS) July 25/26. We are always reinventing ourselves and this year we bring some new stallions to the performance arena and each stallion will auction off two service fees without reserve. This will mean some very cheap service fees to some sensational stallions. AOS historically has a very clear record of presenting stallions that do go on to be Australian icons and who do have genetics to impact on our future...
Service Fee Auction
SERVICE FEE AUCTION
On Sunday the 26th July, at Horseworld in Sydney, the Auction Of The Stars will present eight stallions all of which will auction two service fees each, without reserve. These stallions represent the cutting edge genetics and include the reigning Australian Grand Prix dressage champion, Regardez Moi.
This is the best opportunity in Australia for astute breeders to purchase service fees for the coming breeding season at normally unavailable prices. All of the stallions will be performing on both Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. Auction on Sunday...
Early Moves Towards Rio Olympics
14 April 2015 -
As I mentioned last month 2015 is a big year coming with a view to the Rio Olympics. Already the Australian equestrian scene is becoming a war zone (in a good way) as riders start to flex muscle, horsepower and embark on programs which are focused firstly at being selected for the Australian Olympic team and then secondly at performing at the Olympics...
2015 Big Year Coming
15 February 2015 -
All of the main Australian riders for the Rio De Janeiro Olympics in 2016 will this year be getting their house in order and consciously building credibility with selection next year in mind. This is a fascinating process to watch and often occurs right under everyone’s noses but nobody sees it!...

Barn Fire Kills 6 Horses for Boyd and Silva Martin
Monday morning at 2am on 30th May Boyd and Silva Martin's barn which housed some 11 horses burned to the ground. Boyd and Silva are based in the USA in Pennsylvania where they relocated to from Australia some 3 years ago. The barn that burned down belongs to another ex-Australian, Phillip Dutton, from whom Boyd leases these facilities. Living in the flat immediately above the barn is yet another Australian in Ryan Woods...
Legend Bill Roycroft dies aged 96.
Bill Roycroft was a larger than life Crocodile Dundee. He fought for Australia in World War II, he returned home to become a dairy farmer in Western Victoria. Bill and his wife Mavis were great polocrosse players before becoming immersed in the world of three-day eventing. Bill was 45 years of age when he went to his first Olympics in Rome in 1960 where he broke his collar bone on the cross-country, re-mounted and finished the cross-country course before being rushed to hospital. Signed himself out the next day against doctors orders to ride a faultless show-jumping round and so secure an Olympic Team Gold Medal for Australia. Bill went on to compete in another 4 Olympics. All three sons Wayne, Barry and Clarke also rode for Australia at the Olympics. Bill was a brilliant story teller, had a laconic bush humour and was a natural innate horseman. Bill embraced everything that makes up an Australian legend. it was my great honour to have known him...
Heath and the Sydney CDI 2011
Well Sydney CDI 2011 was probably a show Heath would rather forget!
Firstly let me clarify the reason behind Heath and Regardez Moi's score of 59.2% in the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday night. We have received numerous emails and phone calls saying "the judges got it wrong!", well in fact in this instance even Heath will agree that the judges essentially got it right. I will insert a quote now directly from a reply Heath wrote to one of those emails. "I am still recovering from depression from last night but what you don’t realise is that it was all self-inflicted. In the freestyle there are a certain number of movements you just have to incorporate and that includes canter pirouettes both to the right and to the left. Regardez Moi is really good at pirouettes when behaving and I always do double pirouettes which are considered very difficult. Well last night I did a pretty good double pirouette to the right but completely forgot any pirouettes to the left. It doesn’t matter how much the judges liked me they had to give me a zero for that movement. That equates into a disaster of a score. Mind you it wasn’t my greatest test anyway but I do only have myself to blame. That really hurts."...
Broodmare Business Venture in WA
The following is the venture outlined in principle:
- One of the primary considerations for this Broodmare Business Venture is to network people of like minds and exchange top of the range bloodstock which will respond to passion and as a result contribute to the Australian coalface and future in the Olympic disciplines.
- I recognise that no matter how wonderful these horses are which I have developed over the last 25 years they are nothing more than farm animals unless I can find passionate partners for these individuals. Only then do these spectacular horses have something to offer Australia...
